The SuperMom Mission Gala Honors Black Mothers
I Was Honored At The SuperMom Mission Gala With These Other Powerhouse Black Mothers
Being honored for anything is rare for me, I’m usually on the other side of the microphone. It’s even rarer for me to call myself a super mom. Let’s face it, most of us moms are just trying to make it through the day. It surely doesn’t feel super when you’re in the middle of a breakdown and your child asks you for a snack. Or, when you’ve reached the point of overstimulation and mom rage creeps in. But, for the evening, I allowed myself to be called a super mom and I just received it.
On March 8, the SuperMom Mission, founded by Shaquasia ‘Quay’ Brooks in 2023, held its inaugural SuperMom Mission Gala in Brooklyn hosted by Hot 97’s TT Torrez. Me and four other moms — Bre Scullark, Christina Wilds, Tashera Simmons, and Avery J. Watson were praised for being powerhouse moms. If there’s one thing I deduced from all the women’s acceptance speeches, it’s that I am not alone when it comes to dealing with mom guilt, the challenge of being selfless, and the power of your village.
SuperMom’s Mission
“SuperMom Mission has given back to me in so many ways,” said Quay. “The messages I receive from moms expressing how much our support has impacted them remind me why I do this. It’s humbling and fulfilling to know that something I created is truly making a difference. It’s also strengthened my sense of purpose—not just as a mother, but as a woman determined to uplift others. It’s been a journey of learning, growth, and so much love.”
Quay handpicked each honoree, “I was very intentional, she said. “Choosing moms that I admire, moms that inspire me, and moms whose journeys I deeply respect. Every woman honored is someone I’ve looked at and thought, “Wow, she’s amazing.” Each award was chosen specifically to reflect their unique story and impact.”
Honorees left with a swag bag filled with goodies from Dr. Bobbi’s Big Mouth Toothbrush to Black Girl Sunscreen and DollHouse Cosmetics. We also received personalized jello shot boxes by Koffis Jello Bar. My favorite was the encased floral arrangement by Your Story Is Our Story and the SuperMom plaque adorning my dresser.
Quay had a vision and thought she was a team of one, she managed to pull off the amazing evening with the help of her friend Tiffany. “Organizing the gala was both challenging and rewarding, especially because I don’t have a big team—it’s literally just me. Every detail, from planning to execution, required so much effort, but seeing it all come together so beautifully made it all worth it.”
