Gov. Mike Braun Mandates Indiana Law Enforcement Cooperation
Indiana Gov. Mike Braun signed an executive order Tuesday requiring all state law enforcement agencies to collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The directive calls for agencies to cooperate fully with ICE and establish agreements under federal immigration law (8 U.S.C. 1357(g)) where feasible.
The order follows former President Donald Trump’s 2024 executive order, Securing Our Borders, aimed at addressing illegal immigration and its impact. Braun stated the 2024 election results signaled public demand for stricter immigration enforcement.
“Indiana will do what’s reasonable to help federal authorities target the most dangerous illegal immigrants,” Braun said, emphasizing a focus on those with serious criminal histories.
Under the order, state agencies must report evidence of individuals suspected of illegal immigration to the Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center if they:
- Have prior criminal records or are suspected of committing felonies.
- Are involved in hostile or terror-related activities.
- Pose a significant threat to public safety or national security.
The order applies to statewide agencies like the Indiana State Police and Department of Corrections but stops short of mandating local or county law enforcement participation, though it encourages similar cooperation. The Indiana National Guard may also assist on immigration-related requests.
Rep. Victoria Garcia Wilburn, D-Fishers, criticized the move, arguing it could discourage immigrants from reporting crimes. “These partnerships are critical,” she said, highlighting the challenges faced by immigrants who assist law enforcement.
Critics warn the order’s optics may erode trust in law enforcement within immigrant communities, while supporters view it as a step toward prioritizing public safety.
