JuJu Brents Suffers Knee Injury, Placed On IR

No player on the Colts roster has worse injury luck than JuJu Brents.

And the latest example of that has come out of Week 1 with Brents suffering a knee injury that has sent him to injured reserve. The Colts hope Brents will return later in the season, but his stay on IR is expected to be for a substantial length of time.

Prior to this latest Brents’ news, cornerback depth was already a major Colts question entering the 2024 season.

On Sunday, Brents was the 3rd cornerback for the Colts, playing 62 of the 79 defensive snaps (Kenny Moore II and Jaylon Jones each played all 79 defensive snaps).

A handful of injuries have stunted Brents’ NFL career to just 10 total games played in two seasons and ample missed practice time. The 2023 second-round pick from Warren Central High School has dealt with injuries all over his body since entering the league last spring.

Without Brents, the 2024 Colts will have some decisions to make.

Dallis Flowers was a healthy scratch on Sunday, but was the team’s starting outside cornerback to begin last season. Flowers tore his achilles in October 2023 though and had a shaky preseason in getting back to full health. Darrell Baker Jr., who started opposite Flowers at the beginning of last year is now in Tennessee after the Colts cut him just prior to the start of this season. The Colts opted to keep 20 offensive and defensive linemen instead of retaining Baker Jr.

Other corners in Chris Lammons and Samuel Womack III (claimed at roster cuts from the 49ers) are in-house options, but have mostly been slot corners in their careers, whereas Brents plays outside. On Tuesday, the Colts elevated Lammons from the practice squad to take Brents’ place on the roster.

The cornerback position received zero notable off-season attention from the Colts. A pair of day three draft picks at cornerbackĀ  (Jaylin Simpson and Micah Abraham) are no longer on the Colts 53-man roster.

Chris Ballard has often said the Colts were rolling with the youth movement in 2024, straying away from any free agent signing at corner.

Will that change now with the Brents news?
